In Brief

  • In August, VISEON Bus and the China Youngman Automobile Group signed an agreement governing the participation of the Chinese automobile and commercial vehicle group in the German bus manufacturer ’s business. This was announced by the management of the two companies in a joint statement. By this, the new shareholder Youngman acquires a majority stake in VISEON Bus and, together with the existing shareholders, will participate in a capital increase.
  • Continental Tyre has announced the formation of a strategic supplier partnership with Aircraft Service International Group. It is now in full force at 109 ASIG and Signature Flight Support locations around the US, all of which are supplied with Continental Tyre products. This has strengthened its market position in the Americas: and Continental is now seeking a good return on investment for its increased sales forces there.
  • Singapore-based Aeromobiles has won the Prominent category at this year’s SME One Asia Awards.
  • The Cavotec global engineering group has won a major order for advanced ground support equipment at Memphis International. Cavotec is to supply fuel hydrant pits, vault access covers and valve isolation chambers for aircraft stands at the airport. The project is divided into five separate phases, and Cavotec will deliver its element of the order throughout the year.
  • Vanderlande Industries has secured an order to supply the new baggage handling system for the renovation of passenger Terminal T2 at Rio de Janeiro’s Galeão International Airport in Brazil, which is managed by Empresa Brasileira de Infrastrutura Aeroportuária. The new system is part of the airport’s extensive development and renovation plans in preparation for the 2014 football World Cup and the 2016 Olympics. Vanderlande Industries won the tender auction for €24.6m, together with the Brazilian company Tecnenge. Separately, Vanderlande Industries has been awarded the contract to deliver the baggage handling system for Hanoi International airport’s new Terminal 2 in Vietnam.

CSafe (a joint venture between AmSafe and AcuTemp Thermal Systems) and IAG Cargo, the single business of British Airways World Cargo and Iberia Cargo, have announced the signing of a Master Lease Agreement.

In brief

    • Thanks to strong intra-regional trade, Togo-based AfricaWest Cargo is looking to serve up to ten new African destinations in the near future. Moreover, AfricaWest Cargo has been studying the Far East for growth prospects in the hope of better improving existing Africa/China trade routes.
    • UPS has decided to extend its offer period for its intended acquisition of the Dutch delivery company TNT Express. A new date of November 9 was mooted but this has since been found to be unworkable. The company now says that it does not expect to close its €5.16bn acquisition until early 2013: this has been because of an extension of the European Union’s review.

    Ground Handling International will be holding its 14th annual Ground Handling International conference over 26-29 November 2012.
    For 2012 we have chosen the dynamic city of Milan. While Rome is Italy's political capital, Milan is the country's economic and financial heart and is fed by three international airports and over 100 airlines, making it a very accessible venue.
